Canadian Tamil Hindu Temples (/temples): Darshan Hours, Agamic Poojas & Chariot Festivals
கனடா தமிழ் இந்து ஆலயங்கள்: தரிசன நேரம் மற்றும் மகோற்சவத் திருவிழாக்கள்
A coast-to-coast guide to Canada's 83 Tamil Hindu kovils—from historic Scarborough and Richmond Hill temples to Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, and Metro Vancouver.
Since the consecration of Sri Varasiththi Vinaayagar Hindu Temple in Scarborough and the Hindu Temple Society of Canada in Richmond Hill, Canadian Tamil devotees have built 83 vibrant Hindu temples across Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba. Following authentic Saiva Siddhanta and Agamic traditions rooted in Jaffna (such as Nallur Kandaswamy heritage), Thiruketheeswaram, and Tamil Nadu, these kovils conduct daily multi-kala abhishekams, archana offerings, and community Annadhanam (sacred meals).
During the Canadian summer months (June through September), major temples hold 10-to-15-day annual Brahmotsavam (Mahotsavam) festivals culminating in the outdoor Ther (wooden or silver chariot) procession and Theertham (water-cutting ceremony), drawing tens of thousands of worshippers. Most temples also maintain dedicated Kalyana Mandapams (wedding halls) and book Sivachariyar priests for home Grihapravesham (housewarming), Vahana Pooja (new vehicle blessing), Namakaranam (baby naming), and Ayush Homam rites.
